Venere S is the latest Sonus faber loudspeaker and the new flagship of the Venere collection.  Released 3 years4068_Sonus_faber_Venere_S after the original Venere collection, the Venere S bridges the space between the Venere and Olympica ranges. It is the most powerful three-way speaker of the Venere line with three 180mm woofers for the best reproduction of lower frequencies and is entirely designed and assembled by hand in Arcugnano (Italy).  The three woofer cones of the Venere S are made of aluminium, providing for maximum lightness and stiffness of the transducers to achieve a fast response at low frequencies.  The midrange features a Curv membrane, a special thermoformed polypropylene fibre that provides the ideal solution for a natural reproduction of the main part of the audio spectrum. The high frequencies are reproduced by a tweeter with a soft dome membrane made of silk and manufactured by Dr. Kurt Mueller. The tweeter is mechanically decoupled by interposing a resilient material in order to make the transducer resistant to micro-vibrations generated by the intense activity of the other drivers.  The crossover network is assembled entirely in Italy with high-end components. Venere S is inspired by the shape of lyre and is available in 3 finishes: Piano White, Piano Black, and Wood. Available from September, priced at £3,798 per pair in black or white. The wood option commands a £200 premium. All prices include VAT.

MrSpeakers has worked with legendary headphone designer, Bruce Thigpen (founder of Eminent-Technology andEther_news pioneer of numerous planar magnetic speaker technologies), to produce ETHER, a new planar-driven pair of open-backed, on-ear headphones.  They have produced a new kind of Planar technology, the V-Planar, with extra knurling.  ‘What is knurling?’ you ask, apparently knurling turns the flat planar driver into a more relaxed, accordion shaped zig-zag that prevents driver stretch but allows some ‘give’ at the same time. ETHER also features precision machined aluminium baffle, pivots and gimbals,  NiTinol memory metal head-band for low weight and added comfort, flat ear-pads to reduce weight and enhance the sonic seal, Italian leather with micro-suede headband and  lamb’s leather ear-pad coverings.

Price will be £1,150 for the standard version and £1,250 for the ETHER plus an enhanced cable design.

GIK Acoustics has announced that the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office has issued utility patent US 9,091,060 for GIK’s proprietary design of its acoustic gikstandabsorbers.

The patent covers the design and construction of GIK Acoustics’ 242 Acoustic Panels, 244 Bass Traps with FlexRange Technology, and Monster Bass Traps with FlexRange Technology. GIK Acoustics’ patented design begins with a two-frame system that allows low end frequency waves to be absorbed from the sides and back while the frame maintains a crisp, sharp edge. The design provides a built-in air gap which increases low end absorption, but also allows the panel to hang truly flush on the wall using an integrated wire on the back.

Additionally US Pat. 9,091,060 encompasses GIK’s proprietary FlexRange Technology membrane system which offers customers a choice to control the frequency range that’s absorbed. Without a membrane, their 244 Bass Traps and Monster Bass Traps are broadband. With a membrane, these bass traps absorb even lower frequencies while the membrane has less effect absorbing upper frequencies.

Company founder and president, Glenn Kuras says, “We have been working on and perfecting the effectiveness of our absorbers and am so proud of the exclusive rights to the design and method of build. The patented design truly sets GIK Acoustics apart from the competition and defines the standards we set for ourselves.”

Leema Acoustics, the  Welshpool based hi-fi manufacturer founded and run by two ex-BBC sound engineers, has launched the Xen 2 loudspeaker; the original Xen Angle BlackXen having been the result of a research project to squeeze a BBC-graded monitor speaker into a 5L cabinet!

The new Xen 2 is based on the previous model (deleted in 2008), but with a host of improvements for 2015.  With a volume of just five cubic litres and a front baffle that’s A5, the new Xen 2 is super-compact and easy to position in almost any home or studio environment. Despite its dimensions, the Xen 2 has a frequency response extending down to 57Hz and all the way up to 25kHz.

Originally conceived 17 years ago as a cost-no-object nearfield monitor for use in recording studios and broadcast vehicles, Leema Acoustics’ Xen loudspeaker quickly found favour with music lovers outside of the professional environment.

The Xen 2’s cabinet is made from folded and welded steel, 1.5mm thick; in a speaker of this size, using the industry-standard 18mm-thick MDF/veneer solution would have simply added too much bulk. The steel is lined with a bitumastic layer, a technique also employed in the automotive industry, and the cavity is then stuffed with real sheep’s wool.

The back panel is steel with bitumen on the inside and the crossover board is attached to the terminals directly. The crossover uses Bennic parts and air core inductors where possible, to avoid saturation and compression in the crossover. The cabinet also benefits from a 12mm-thick steel bar across the centre to prevent flex and the front panel is machined from an impressively rigid high-grade MDF to provide the drive units with the

optimum operating environment. The baffle is then finished in either a wood veneer or a conventional black paint.

The Xen 2 benefits from two bass reflex ports, which extend into the cabinet then fold down behind the bass driver, with each measuring 260mm. Twin ports are used to ensure that the speed of the air moving in the port is below 0.1x the speed of sound (Mach).

The Xen 2’s bass ports are placed close to the drive unit, so that the integration is as good as possible. The original Xen has SEAS drivers, but following their discontinuation, Leema Acoustics’ engineering team commissioned a drive unit to be built to its own specification.

The bass/mid driver is a highly durable unit with exceptional cone excursion and the tweeter is a soft-dome unit with a neodymium magnet and Ferro-fluid-loaded coil, which helps  damp resonance and aid cooling.

In order to combat the unwanted midrange peak inherent in many four-inch (100mm) drive units, the cabinet has been specially designed to ‘give a little’ at just the right frequency which helps minimise the effect.

  • Cabinet: Braced folded steel, wooden baffle
  • Tweeter: 25mm soft-dome unit
  • Bass/mid unit: 100mm custom-spec unit
  • Finishes: Silver with veneered baffle; black paint

The Xen 2 is priced at £1,295 and is available now.

Hifi Pig have a pair in for a full and detailed review which will be published in the very near future.

ER4S, ER4PT and HF series of isolator earphones from Etymotic Research have just been launched onto the UKer4p_frost_eartips_curledcord_v1_rgb market. Unlike most earphones Etymotic earphones are designed to be inserted inside the actual ear canal. The airtight seal created by the earphone’s custom-designed ear tips allow highly-focused sound waves to reach the ear drums and the bass response does not dissipate. The noise isolation of 35 dB – 42 dB is documented as being the highest of any earphones or headphones on the market today meaning the volume level need not be as high as regular non-noise isolating earphones, reducing the risk of ear damage.

The HF3 and HF5 earphones are very compact and useful for frequent travelling and going to the gym. The high accuracy and sound isolation of the ER4S have made these earphones popular with musicians, recording engineers and audiophiles. The ER4PT earphones are intended for sound engineers and audiophiles and come equipped with extra accessories and adapters.

The Kassandra uses the AD1865 chip, an 18bit R2R converter, which they say is probably the best sounding audio DAC …in fact they use 32 of them,16 converters per channel. KAssandra_2_DAC

The 16 converters in each channel work in complimentary mode, so that 8 converters are inverted. The two differential converter banks work in synchronicity  to achieve perfect symmetry. The 16 converters are working in current mode, and use an INtransformer so that the current differential is converted in single ended voltage output. No resistors or OPAMPS are used in the INconversion stage.

The analogue stage is implemented by a single ended transformer coupled triode stage, using the E280F,working in triode  mode, loaded with a  step down output transformer. The tube’s grid is driven by the secondary of the INtransformer  via an adjustable bias supply. The tube  power  supply is an oversized choke regulated supply. The step-down transformer  reduces the output  impedance  to 40ohms, with a maximum swing at full scale of 30Vpp sine wave.

The converter is equipped with an internal super-clock, which re-clocks the converters, making the processor virtually immune to transport changes, says the company’s press release. With the internal clock, there is no need for a word clock input. The super-clock re-clocker can be bypassed on the fly, so you can hear the effect of jitter elimination in your system.

The Kassandra Mk2 is available is signature version, with  upgraded power supplies. The Signature’s power supply is a complex system of a total of 8 toroidal transformers, for full separation of digital section, analogue supplies, clock supply and the tube circuits.

So you thought that a Pug was one of those cute little dogs that looks like its run into a wall? Not anymore!  Roksanpug_fr_150402_0629 have just launched their new tonearm, The Pug. The Pug is based around a large, yet light and rigid, 22mm diameter carbon fibre arm tube; while most other parts feature high-quality black chromed anodised aluminium. The large counterweight area at the rear of the arm employs a solid, perfectly balanced fixed section in combination with two adjustable counterweights that are changed by the user depending on the weight and tracking force of the cartridge that’s been installed. Anti-skate is managed by a traditional ‘weight & thread’ mechanism at the front of the counterweight area. Queen: The Studio Collection’, to be released on 25 September 2015, brings together the complete collection of 15 studio albums, re-mastered by the legendary Bob Ludwig and mastered for half speed vinyl QUEEN TT LID OPEN V2cutting by Miles Showell at Abbey Road, presenting these classic albums in the highest possible quality for die-hard fans and audiophiles alike.  Complementing the release of the 18 disc coloured vinyl box set is the launch of a limited edition ‘Queen by Rega’ turntable, featuring custom printed Queen artwork.

The primary objective during the five years it took to produce ‘The Studio Collection’ was to obtain the optimum sound quality.  Queen’s production team was closely involved in all stages of the re-mastering process, starting with the initial tape research to locate and confirm the correct versions and best sources for all the tracks.  Five tracks from ‘Innuendo’ and the track Under Pressure were improved by the discovery of better sources and particular attention was paid to the original releases to ensure nothing was lost or degraded by reverting to earlier sources.

After a double blind testing of sample tracks mastered by leading engineers, Grammy Award winning Bob Ludwig was chosen to re-master the entire project.  Probably the best-known mastering engineer in the world, Ludwig’s skills and state-of-the-art analogue and digital equipment at his Gateway Mastering facility, enabled him to produce new masters that are undoubtedly the finest ever.  The initial plan was to re-master directly from the original mix tapes, but time has rendered them in need of some restoration. New 24bit/96kHz digital masters were made from the original tapes and any speed errors, missing audio, clicks and other unwanted noise were rectified in the digital domain, with the vinyl cut from these perfected files.

With vinyl pressings, the ultimate playback experience depends on the physical cut of the groove in the lacquers used at the manufacturing plant. Miles Showell from Abbey Road has perfected the technique of cutting at half speed, doubling the accuracy in cutting the groove, resulting in the best possible audio quality when played back at home.  Using a beautifully maintained Neumann VMS80 lathe with cutter-head amplifiers featuring custom designed RIAA filters, Showell is able to produce the very cleanest sound possible.  With his typical attention to detail, only after cutting acetate samples to check the progress of each track and then fixing any sibilance or other vinyl-specific problems, did he cut the final lacquers.

Queen’s dedication to making this release the best possible quality included choosing Germany-based Optimal as the pressing plant. Optimal is well known for its audiophile quality pressings and the company was closely involved in the development of the coloured vinyl using new materials technology so as not to compromise the audio. The 18 discs that make up The Studio Collection are pressed on heavyweight 180gm theme coloured vinyl, each representing the primary colour from the album’s artwork. Direct comparisons were made between test pressings on black vinyl and the coloured vinyl, which were compared with original pressings of the LPs on a very high quality turntable.  In the words of Freddie Mercury, “Was it all worth it?  Yes, it was a worthwhile experience.”

Queen is a band that has always offered its albums on vinyl at the time of release, even during the heyday of CDs.  For the final two albums, ‘Innuendo’ and ‘Made in Heaven’, the running time was determined by the longer format of the CD, with edited versions released on vinyl at the time.  With the box set spanning 18 discs for the 15 albums, the full contents of these two albums can be experienced for the first time on vinyl, split across the four sides of each of the double albums.  As an added bonus for Queen fans and collectors, ‘Queen II’, originally released without a designated ‘A’ or ‘B’ side, but with ‘Side White’ and ‘Side Black’, two separate discs have been issued, one white and one black and each featuring a custom etching on the reverse side.

To complete the package for Queen fans, aligning with the worldwide renaissance of vinyl and turntables, Queen has teamed up with the hugely respected UK turntable manufacturer Rega.  The resulting limited edition official turntable features reproductions of classic Queen logos, including the Freddie Mercury designed Queen crest silkscreen printed across the platter, and the exclusive ‘Queen by Rega’ logo on the gloss black plinth.

Featuring the hand-built RB101 tone arm, from the company’s popular RP1 record player, the ‘Queen by Rega’ turntable features a new low noise, low vibration, 24v synchronous high performance motor and a Rega Carbon moving magnet cartridge. An optional upgrade to the handmade Rega Bias 2 cartridge is available for those fans wishing to extract even more information from their new box set.

Accompanying the box set to make it into a real must-have for collectors will be a lavishly illustrated 108-page hardback book.  Featuring introductions to each album, quotes from Queen, copies of hand-written lyrics, rare photographs, memorabilia and information on the band’s singles and videos, the book has been made possible by unlimited access to Queen’s archive plus the personal archives of Brian May and Roger Taylor.

If I told you that this album is recorded by a 26 year old male from Glasgow, you probably wouldn’t believe me.  That’s because – putting Chris Duncan’s geographical origins to one side for a moment – ‘Architect’ sounds like it might have been recorded at some point during the sixties.  It’s so far away from what’s happening in the charts that you’d have to ask Scott McKenzie for directions.  This is a good thing!  Let’s hope you’re in the mood to relax when you sit down to listen to this – if the harmonies don’t cause you to float away on a cloud, then the relaxed acoustic guitars and laid-back melodies almost certainly will.

Not the usual kind of news and more of a public service broadcast on behalf of the guys at Entotem.

“Due to circumstances beyond our control, the directors at Entotem have decided to postpone their Retail Launch on the 8th July 2015 at the Jumeriah Carlton Tower Hotel. The decision to postpone is as a result of the planned London tube strike starting at 18.00pm on the 8th July for 24 hours. London Transport has since issued a notice to travellers and workers within London confirming alternative travel arrangements.

The ASLEF, RMT, Unite and TSSA unions are currently planning strike action, affecting London Underground. If this goes ahead, there will be no Tube service from late afternoon on Wednesday 8 July and no Tube service at all on Thursday 9 July.

All other public transport services and roads would, of course, be much busier than usual.

In order not to inconvenience anyone who was due or planning to attend the event, the decision to move it back was taken. We truly hope that you will understand our decision given the exceptional circumstances and hope that once we announce a new date you will be able to join us in our launch.

Please accept our sincere apologies for any inconvenience this decision may have caused, we will be in contact again shortly to confirm the new launch details.”

GIK Acoustics-Europe, manufacturer and seller of acoustical absorption and diffusion products, has announced their latest product: the GIK Acoustics Evolution PolyFusor. GIK Acoustics Evolution PolyFusor Red w black top

The GIK Acoustics Evolution PolyFusor is a combination of a polycylindrical diffusor and an absorber merged into a single unit. Polycylindrical diffusors, or polyfusors, are known for their excellent dispersion characteristics over a very wide range. The curved front plate allows for virtually perfect spatial diffusion, while letting lower frequency waves pass through to the cavity of absorption behind.

The Evolution PolyFusor is best used in multiples to keep the sound spread evenly throughout the room, and to help with low frequency build up and standing waves. The Evolution PolyFusor is said to be a great addition to a room where wide band dispersion is needed, especially as an addition to deep corner bass traps and other absorbers.

Features of the Evolution PolyFusor:

  • Poly diffusors are known for their excellent dispersion characteristics, the Evolution PolyFusor is virtually a perfect spatial diffusor
  • Standard dimensions: 1200mm tall x 600mm wide with a narrow 155mm profile that hugs the walls
  • Thin wood poly lets low frequency waves in for low end absorption
  • Ideal on the front wall, rear sidewalls or back wall of control Ideal basically anywhere in a live/recording room
  • The Evolution PolyFusor smoothly transitions from a bass trap at 80Hz, to upper-bass/lower-mid scattering device, to Starts diffusing at 600Hz.
  • When properly used in multiples, in relation to boundaries and/or with absorption, the Evolution PolyFusor truly sounds neutral but provides a bigger feel psychoacoustically

The Evolution PolyFusor provides a mix of absorption and diffusion capabilities. GIK Acoustics-Europe General Manager David Shevyn comments, “The Evolution PolyFusor is another dynamic product that we’ve developed that provides form and function at a reasonable price.

Poly diffusors are a great way to retain life in a space without creating unwanted glaring, smearing or other mix position horrors.”

Hifi Pig are currently experimenting with GIK panels in our main listening room here in France and we’ll be repôrting our findings in the near future!

The new Spendor A5R is an ultra-compact 2.5 way, floor-standing loudspeaker. The A5R sets new class standards for sound quality, efficiency, ease of drive, dispersion and low frequency phase coherence says the UK company’s latest press release.A5R black ash with background image 1

“We believe the Spendor A5R is the most room-friendly ultra- compact floor standing loudspeaker ever created. With its slim elegant proportions, and sound performance which is almost independent of room placement, it is the perfect loudspeaker for any small room” the company’s spokesperson added.

Spendor have applied their D-line technology to create a pair of Spendor drivers which are mechanically and electrically designed to work in perfect harmony in a single sealed acoustic enclosure. Both drivers feature cast magnesium alloy chassis, high efficiency motor systems, optimised electro-dynamic damping, and excellent thermal dissipation for wide dynamic range. A 15cm EP77 polymer coned bass-mid driver handles all the mid-range frequencies and, at modest listening levels, most of the low frequencies. As the low frequency content of the music increases an ultra-rigid two part bonded Kevlar composite cone 15cm driver begins to handle more of the low frequencies.

With its unique driver combination the A5R is said to offer excellent efficiency and very high power handling. It does not require any form of tuned port or line and so consequently A5R is free from low frequency phase anomalies and ‘slow’ bass reproduction.

High frequencies are handled by a 22mm wide-surround tweeter with a polyamide textile diaphragm. Its acoustic output is phase and time-aligned with the mid-bass driver output to create a wide even listening window.

The Spendor A5R is available in light oak, dark walnut, cherry, black ash veneer and satin white lacquer. The plinth is a complementary satin black lacquer.

Spendor A5R UK retail price is £1,995.00 per pair for veneer finishes and £2,195.00 for satin white lacquer finish.

UK based manufacturer Graham Slee is a name well known in audio circles and Graham has recently been in touchjazzclub_graham_slee_news with Hifi Pig to tell us about an interesting concept the company has hatched, to help their current customers and attract new ones. Whilst this isn’t news per se; it is certainly new to us and we thought it would be interesting for Hifi Pig’s readers.

The Owners Club Forum is basically a forum in support of the Graham Slee brand.  Graham wanted the forum to be a relaxed and respectful place for owners of his products to engage with himself and other owners.  The forum is used to educate and advise, sending out detailed information about Graham Slee products and announcing new products.  Market research is another key element as is sharing reviews of the products.  There is also DIY information demonstrating that Graham really knows his stuff when it comes to electronic design.  Non owners are welcome to join as they can then try out products through the loaners program and hopefully go on to be owners!  Members are signed up manually so that spammers are kept out and there is also a loyalty program that rewards active contributors to the site, the more you post the better discount you get.

The Loaners Program is part of the forum.  Graham has found volunteers to act as organisers of the program in the UK and Western Europe, the USA, Australia and Canada.  These volunteers are sent the full range of Graham Slee products to keep in their ‘toy Cupboard’.  The program is designed to be like a lending library so that people can try before they buy rather then buying a product cold, trying it and then returning it to try something else.  Graham argues that while the old way of doing things is completely within the consumer’s rights it is not the most efficient way of doing things, with the need to repackage items to then be resold as used items having an environmental impact. With the Loaner Program members contact the organiser for their region through the forum to put in their loan requests and then just pay for the item(s) to be shipped to them.  The general loan period is 2 weeks, after which the loaner sends the item back to their regional organiser and, if they are happy with the product, they can submit a review and of course go on to buy their own if they so wish.

At Hifi Pig we think that this is a great idea and wish Graham Slee and his team every success.
